I read several years ago that FB started life as a DARPA* project. Is there any truth in that? Anybody know? In any case I never use FB for anything but trolling (via Tor).

I’ve heard that too. It makes sense that the spook agencies would want to get in on the ground floor on any intelligence gathering companies. I’m sure they invest in a lot of those sort of startups. I’ve heard that they pretty much bankrolled Google in the beginning and helped them out on the technical side also. A win-win for all involved.

@discustard Those giant internet companies made their fortunes doing business with government intelligence agencies, not because of any MYTHICAL “free market”.
